Surviving sixty thousand years takes cunning and more than a little luck. But in the twenty-first century, Adam confronts new dangers-someone has found out what he is, a demon is after him, and he has run out of places to hide. Worst of all, he has had entirely too much to drink.

An artful blending of a first-person confessional, sci-fi, adventure, fantasy, and humor, Immortal introduces a world with vampires, demons and other "magical" creatures, yet a world without actual magic.

Immortal (Audible Audio Edition) Gene Doucette Jeff Steitzer The Writer Coffee Shop Books

This well-written, genre-bending novel combines science fiction with the paranormal, snarky humor with suspense and adventure. Its premise is that the protagonist, an otherwise normal man, was born sometime well before the dawn of history , and by simply avoiding being killed has avoided dying ever since. Normal aging beyond the age of about 35, and things such as infection and disease cannot touch him, but violence can-- and judging by this story, he's not at all good at avoiding it.

He likes alcohol, too much for his own good-- he can't end up with cirrhosis, but he tends to talk way too much when drunk, and eventually, just through plain bad luck, he's always going to find himself drinking with someone who believes him.

He drinks because he's unhappy. How not, when everyone with whom he finds himself in relationship dies on him? It doesn't stop him from finding relationships, of course. He particularly likes younger women (what other kind are there? but here I mean in their 20s), and they like him; he's had a of time to practice his, um, 'physical skills'.

In this book, the first of a series, he finds himself in serious trouble when he learns that someone has figured out who, and what, he is... and hired a great many bounty hunters to bring him in.

There are also a couple of beautiful, and naked, women. One of them is under four inches tall.

There is also a teaser short story for Hellenic Immortal, included at the end of Immortal. The teaser is fun to read, given that it's presented as pillow talk between our protagonist and a stunningly beautiful succubus (redundant, I know). It's also sadly flawed, as the succubus, when not trying to get information about the Ancient Greek Gods (among other, more enjoyable activities) from our protagonist, is seducing senior Anglican churchmen. Unfortunately, according to the author she is bedding an Anglican cardinal.

Anglicans do not have cardinals-- the most senior rank is archbishop, just as the most senior churchman is the Archbishop of Canterbury.

If you are going to write about history, it's best to get it right.

Immortal (Audible Audio Edition) Gene Doucette Jeff Steitzer The Writer Coffee Shop Books Reviews

I stumbled across this book quite by accident...I accidentally looked inside and proceeded to read the sample first few paragraphs and was intrigued by what I read. It's a bit different than any other story I have ever read, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's kind of funny how he views the world, especially for the first part of the book...he likes his drink and lives like he hasn't a care in the world until something happens worth sobering up a bit for. He's actually a but more intelligent a character than he lets on in the beginning, and the pace begins to pick up. I do enjoy books on the paranormal, and while there are mentions of a few other human like species normally thought of as having paranormal origins such as pixies and vampires, the author creates a world where they are simply species which exist on the fringes of society, and don't have any supernatural explanations behind their existence, having simply evolved alongside humanity in much smaller numbers. I should note here, that although other humanoid species might be mentioned, and the protagonist is immortal, it doesn't strike me as such an unlikely world as many paranormal, sci-fi, or fantasy books tend to do. They are my favorite genres maybe, but it's obvious it's a fantasy world usually...I guess something about the writing, perhaps partially because of the world view of the main character, makes it seem as if these things could actually almost happen. It's more realistic I suppose, in a strange sort of way, considering there are other supposed mythical creatures mentioned. I like the writing style, and that the main character is a lot more believable than so many characters and mythical creatures that exist in the books I normally read.
I had to make myself finish this book. I kept hoping it would get better, and I would start to like the various characters...but I never did. I finally came to the end, and all I could feel was relief. Deleting this from my .
I love this book and the direction it follows. One minute your in modern times and in the next Adam is walking down memory lane with some funny or a scary story of disastrous outcomes as he barely makes it out alive like the fire in the liquor house during prohibition...that was caused by a molotov cocktail, thrown by the same guys shooting up folks running from the club. Unbelievable and WOW all at the same time!!

I am new to Mr. Doucette's genre, and I am here to stay. He is now one of my favorite and I have every intention to finish this series. Immortal made me laugh out-loud with Adams antics, like waking up naked behind a couch...what the hell?

Advice to those who like to skip pages, DON'T, you will miss something.
I bought the 3 book series (Immortal, Hellenic Immortal, and Immortal at the Edge of the World) & I really loved all three. The series is very unique, though, so I admit it might not be for everyone. It's told in a humorous first person voice by a sarcastic, funny character who has lived since cave man times. It's set in a realistic world but includes elements of fantasy as well as historical fiction as the author tucks in little stories about different cultures & famous people he has met in his past. These books can be purchased singly or by the series. I bought the series because I have loved other books by this author.

All three stories in this series have stood on their own, although the larger picture is more satisfying if you read them in order. I highly recommend all of them. I'm a person who does most of my reading through the library so I carefully choose which books I actually purchase. The Immortal books have been some of the best money I have spent on and I plan to follow this author and pay for more of his outstanding work.
