Come spend Memorial Day at a small city in the Deep South. You may be surprised at what you see and hear. I was.
Will Bevis is a prolific writer of short, sometimes very controversial "slice of life" stories, articles, essays, and memoirs.

I am so thankful that we have (for the most part) become more respectful of the veterans than we were to those coming home from Vietnam. They were treated shamefully, and there is no excuse for that. Those men didn't have a choice (well, unless they fled the country) because we had the draft back then. So they were doing their duty - many of them only because the government said they had to serve and they didn't meet any of the exemptions - and then they came home to be spat upon and treated like garbage!Boy. Wasn't that a proud moment for America? (And, NO. I am NOT being serious!) That was just about as noble as locking up our own citizens in camps and taking their property just because they were Japanese. How come we didn't do that with the Germans? (That sweep would have taken my family.)
At any rate, something has changed in the American spirit. I think it probably started before this, but I believe that when the monster flew into the towers, he created a deep respect and gratitude for our soldiers that we have not had for way too long - possibly even since WWII.
This story is about honoring our veterans, listening to their stories, thanking them for their service, being proud of being Americans once again, and recognizing the debt we owe these men and women. It is about knowing that these holidays MEAN something, and that is not merely having a cookout or family get-together. People shed their blood and gave their lives so that we could live free.
Will reminds us of this very eloquently with this story. My own father was a veteran. He could hardly stand waiting until his birthday the summer following Pearl Harbor: he wanted to enlist immediately! Want to know when I learned this fact? At his funeral! Never once in all my life did we go to any type of event that would have even hinted of the military.
Perhaps it was too much for him because he didn't want anyone to know he was part German. But whatever the reason, after reading this story, I realize that I was cheated out of something extraordinary. I am glad that I have had several opportunities to celebrate the holidays with the men in uniform over the past few years.
Do yourself a favor: read this story. Once in a while Will flat out knocks it out of the ballpark. This was a home run, and all the bases were loaded.
But don't just read the story. CELEBRATE our freedom and the men and women who were willing to wear those uniforms so that we CAN be free. Then remember to thank every soldier you see for their service. They don't HAVE to serve today: there is no draft. Yet these people are willing to give their lives that Freedom may live. A simple "thank you" is not that difficult when you think of what they gave to merit the thanks.
